March 2012 FDCPA/TCPA Summary

In March, 920 cases were filed in US District Courts for alleged violations of the FDCPA and TCPA. Case volumes were 16% higher than February case totals. Year to date case totals now stand at 2,053 representing 2,727 plaintiffs For all U.S. District Court filings in March, the five states with the highest number of filings were California (127), New York (90), Florida (77), Colorado (67), and Pennsylvania (56). These five states represent 45% of all the FDCPA/TCPA cases filed in the U.S. and Puerto Rico in US District Courts for the month.
Plaintiffs filing multiple FDCPA/TCPA lawsuits in January had the heaviest concentration in the following Districts: New York Eastern, Colorado, and Florida Middle. It should also be noted that thirty-seven percent (37%) of all FDCPA/TCPA cases in the Central District of California were filed Pro Se. Pro Se plaintiff totals have now reached 265 for the calendar year. Also of interest, just over 8% of all FDCPA/TCPA litigation for the month was filed by plaintiffs that resided outside that specific jurisdiction.
