A Houma man who owned a Kenner debt collection company has been booked with theft after allegedly collecting more than $65,000 from numerous delinquent accounts and then pocketing the money, Kenner police said.

ARMing Heroes (www.armingheroes.org) today announced the creation of its One for a Warrior program. For a cost of only $1 per collector per year, this new program creates a way for bill collectors to refer U.S. military veterans and their spouse and children to ARMing Heroes so they can apply for a grant to pay off or pay down a delinquent bill.

At courthouses across the United States, it has become increasingly common during the economic downturn for lawsuits to be filed against consumers to collect old debts. Lawyers who specialize in the practice are filing thousands of suits on behalf of large firms that have acquired debts from other companies. Although most people don’t fight the suits and lose them by default, a Dallas woman bucked the trend last October.
