FTC Issues Interim Report to Congress on National Study of Credit Report Accuracy

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a fourth interim report to Congress describing progress the agency has made on a national study examining the accuracy of credit reports. Congress directed the FTC to conduct a study of credit report accuracy and provide interim reports every two years, starting in 2004 and continuing through 2012, with a final report in 2014.

At FTC’s Request, Court Shutters International Credit Card Debt Reduction Operation

FTC: Fix ‘broken’ debt collection system

After several years of investigation into credit card and other debt-related disputes, the Federal Trade Commission this week unanimously approved and issued a 118-page report that did not mince words:
“The commission concludes that the current system for resolving consumer debts is broken, because consumers are not adequately protected in either debt collection litigation or arbitration.”

WASHINGTON — The four organizations representing the nation’s accounts receivables management industry are calling on Congress to keep the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as the exclusive regulator of debt purchasers and collectors. This unprecedented action by these trade groups to come together is a response to proposed legislation that would strip the FTC of its powers and place the industry under a new authority.
